Can you Save Goldilocks? A STEM Adventure

Age Range: Ages 5 to 8 Years Old

Course Description: Welcome to "Can you Save Goldilocks? A STEM Adventure," a magical camp where young learners from ages 5 - 8 bring classic fairytales to life through engaging STEM activities. In this class, students will dive into the enchanting worlds of Goldilocks, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and the Three Little Pigs, applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills to explore scientific concepts embedded within these stories.

Course Highlights:

  • Cinderella’s Carriage Construction: Harness principles of physics and engineering to design and build a model carriage. Explore friction, force, and motion to ensure Cinderella arrives at the ball smoothly and stylishly.
  • Goldilocks’s Just-Right Bed: Use measurement, geometry, and engineering to craft a perfectly sized and comfortable bed for Goldilocks, experimenting with different materials and structural designs.
  • Rapunzel’s Tower Building: Engage in structural engineering by constructing a tower for Rapunzel. Utilize basic materials like straws and string to discover principles of stability, balance, and tension.
  • The Three Little Pigs’ Material Exploration: Develop and test different housing solutions for the Three Little Pigs, learning about the properties of materials like straw, sticks, and bricks, and understanding what makes structures durable.

Daily Activities:

  • Monday: Introduction to Fairytales and STEM – Overview of the week and beginning the Cinderella’s carriage project.
  • Tuesday: Goldilocks’s Bed Design – Focus on measurements and material properties.
  • Wednesday: Rapunzel’s Tower Challenge – Building and testing towers.
  • Thursday: Three Little Pigs’ Construction – Experiment with different building materials.
  • Friday: Fairytale Showcase – Present and demonstrate all projects; parents and guardians are invited to view and participate in interactive displays.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Gain an understanding of basic physics, engineering, and material science through practical, hands-on projects.
  2. Enhance critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills in a fun and engaging way.

TAKE HOME BONUS:

  • DIY Fairy Tale Engineering Kit: Continue the adventure at home with a kit containing materials and instructions to recreate favorite class projects.
